Grand Beach vs Gimli

If you are reading this post you probably know that Gimli and surrounding beaches including Winnipeg Beach, are on the west side of Lake Winnipeg’s South Basin. Grand Beach is on the east side.
In my opinion, if you’re looking for a beach day, then Grand Beach wins hands down. If you want to peruse a cute little township, with many shops restaurants and services then Gimli is what you’re looking for.
Personally, I’m a beach guy. Grand beach sand is world famous. Playboy magazine once rated Grand Beach “top 10 in the world”.  The sand is fine and white and just a pleasure to feel between your toes. Click on this Global News link for information on Grand Beach’s “2018 Blue Flag eco-certification”. Or this “Enviromental Defence” websites link:  https://environmentaldefence.ca/report/guide-blue-flag-criteria-for-beaches/

I am a fan of Beach Volleyball and Beach Sports in general. We recently entered a beach volleyball tournament at Gimli Beach and we could not complete the tournament due to the terrible sand conditions. The sand is almost gravel like in areas. Also, I am a big fan of Sandcastle building. I find it near impossible to sculpt sand on the beaches in the Gimli area.
In conclusion, if you’re hitting the beach, it’s Grand Beach all the way. If you are also in search of great restaurants and shops, Grand Beach and the neighboring town of Grand Marais have plenty of choices. However, not as many as Gimli.
Overall I have to say sorry Gimli fans. In my opinion, Grand Beach rules!

PS: Did I mention the ‘Caribbean-like” sunsets that we enjoy on the Grand Beach side of Lake Winnipeg! It’s true though. The Gimli side does get the beautiful sunrises.
